What is Bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol is a vegan skincare extract derived from the leaves and seeds of the babchi plant also known as the Psoralea corylifolia plant. Bakuchiol has its roots in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine, used as a powerful herb to help calm and soothe the skin.
In skincare, Bakuchiol is often compared to Retinol, which is often hailed as the most effective anti-ageing ingredient. Due to its ability to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also a potent antioxidant, which helps to reduce skin hyperpigmentation.
Is Bakuchiol a good alternative to Retinol?
Studies have shown there is very little difference between Retinol and Bakuchiol in treating signs of ageing. Using Retinol or Bakuchiol on your skin helps to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of ageing, such as hyperpigmentation.
The main difference is that Retinol tends to cause dryness and irritation – a frustrating stage users tend to need to push through to see results. You also need to be careful what ingredients you use with Retinol in your skincare routine. Due to Bakuchiol’s gentle nature, you can use it alongside other actives including Retinol, AHAs or Vitamin C.
Also, Bakuchiol isn’t known to make skin more sensitive to sunlight, unlike Retinol. However, we still recommend using SPF every day to achieve and maintain the best anti-ageing results.
What are the key benefits?
Where to start…. This wonder ingredient has a huge array of anti-ageing benefits. So, we can’t wait for you to start using it within your routine.
The key benefit is its ability to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Bakuchiol tells your cells to regenerate and make collagen helping to restore firmness, refine skin texture and even out skin tone.
Bakuchiol also helps even skin tone, thanks to its antioxidant properties. Helping to reduce the appearance of dark spots or areas of hyperpigmentation. Antioxidants also help to protect the skin from pollution and environmental stressors which can cause damage.
By promoting cell turnover and healthy cell regeneration, Bakuchiol may also help soothe and calm the skin. Hence why it does not cause dryness or irritation, also making it suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Sounds good, doesn’t it? In addition to its anti-ageing and calming properties, this clever extract may also soothe breakout-prone skin.
How to use Bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol skincare products can be used once or twice daily on a cleansed face and deck. Apply your products in the order of thinnest to thickest. So if your product is a serum it should be applied before your moisturiser.
What also counts is the concentration of Bakuchiol; research has shown that percentages between 0.5-2% are ideal to get visible benefits.
